Health examination "fit to compete"

Statutory health inspection of show and competition horses at major competitions will be carried out for the following disciplines at LM 2024:

  • Middleround í A fl. gæðinga, B fl. gæðinga og ungmennaflokki (young adults)
  • Finals in A fl. gæðinga, B fl. gæðinga og ungmennaflokki (young adults)

  • Second run in 150 og 250 m pace race
  • 2st round Breeding horses, 5 old and older

The horses must come for inspection the day before each event/show.

The horses must arrive with a halfter but without a blanket. It is important that only one person accompanies each horse, rider, owner or assistant. The person concerned must have with him information about the harness used in the preliminary competition or intermediate groups (not necessary for the breeding horses).

The health examination includes the following items:

  1. Examination of the general condition (musculature, lymph nodes, breathing as well as body temperature and heart sounds if necessary)
  2. Inspection of the front of the mouth. Tongue retracted (without anesthesia)
  3. Feet felt and gait inspection (movements in walk and trot on hard surface)

If any of the following items are found, a horse is deemed "unfit for show or competition" and is not allowed to enter the competition arena:

Feeling of discomfort and/or illness

Skinny (below 2.5 on the flesh scale), fever, abnormal breathing and heart sounds, prominently swollen lymph nodes, prominent cough and/or heavy purulent nasal discharge
Severe oral injuries
Transmucosal ulcers of the cheeks, corners of the mouth and tongue, larger than 1 cm, or tender and swollen ulcers
Transmucosal ulceration in the edentulous space
Prominent swelling and/or tenderness in the edentulous space
Marked receding of the mucous membrane in front of the front molars along with tenderness
Inflammation associated with periosteum or bone
Percutaneous chain wounds, larger than 1 cm, or tender and swollen wounds
Serious leg injuries

Cutaneous ulcers with distinct tenderness and swelling of subcutaneous tissues, bunions or heel spurs
Other larger skin lesions
Severe poo, extensive and/or painful
Limp
Anything else that, in the opinion of the tournament veterinarian, makes a horse unfit for show or competition

The conclusion that a horse is "unfit to compete" is reported to the head judge / show manager. A horse that has been judged "unfit to compete" in one event may not compete in any other event or appear at any show in the same event.
